Ozello Tidal Surge: A New Operational Product from NHC

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has introduced a new operational product called the Potential Storm Surge Flooding Map, designed to help predict and prepare for coastal flooding caused by storm surges. This innovative tool is based on the Probabilistic Hurricane Storm Surge (P-Surge 2.5) model, developed in cooperation with the NHC.

The P-Surge 2.5 model takes into account various factors that affect the accuracy of storm surge predictions, including uncertainty in tropical cyclone tracks, intensity, and wind fields. The Potential Storm Surge Flooding Map uses the National Weather Service's (NWS) Sea, Lake, and Overland Surges from Hurricanes (SLOSH) model to forecast the geographic areas likely to experience storm surge flooding and the potential height of water above ground.

The map is color-coded to represent different water levels, allowing users to quickly identify areas where inundation from storm surge could occur. This valuable tool provides critical information for emergency managers, broadcast meteorologists, and others responsible for coordinating response efforts during severe weather events.

The Potential Storm Surge Flooding Map has been developed over several years in consultation with social scientists and emergency management officials to ensure its accuracy and effectiveness. According to the NHC, storm surges are often the greatest threat to life and property, directly accounting for significant damage and loss associated with tropical cyclones in the United States.

Starting in 2016, the National Hurricane Center will issue Potential Storm Surge Flooding Maps for certain tropical cyclones that affect the East and Gulf Coasts of the United States. This new product is designed to improve overall awareness and understanding of the storm surge flooding threat, enabling better decision-making and more effective emergency response planning.
